Appointments update – 3 December 2025

Myfanwy Barrett and Robert Branagh have been reappointed as non-executive directors for The Pensions Ombudsman (TPO).

Pensions Minister, Torsten Bell, has agreed to reappoint Myfanwy Barrett and Robert Branagh as non-executive directors for TPO. The appointments are effective from 1 May 2026. The reappointments are valid for a three-year period until 30 April 2029. TPO chair, Deborah Evans, said she was “delighted” that Barrett and Branagh have been reappointed to TPO’s Corporate Board. “Since my appointment as chair in July, I have been impressed by the knowledge and skills they both bring to TPO and look forward to continuing to work with them to support TPO in achieving its strategic goals over the coming years,” Evans added.

The Pension Protection Fund (PPF) has appointed David Sproul to its board.

Sproul has more than 30 years of experience in leadership roles across the financial and professional services sector, with a focus on consumer and service. He is currently chair of Pennon Group and Starling Bank, Safanad non-executive director, Bridgepoint Group senior adviser and University of Hertfordshire chair of the board of governors. In his new role, Sproul brings expertise in strategy, risk management, audit and organisational transformation. Standard Life has appointed Angela Byrne as chief executive officer of pensions and savings.

Byrne will join the organisation in January 2026 from NatWest, where she spent 20 years, most recently as interim CEO of the retail bank. She is experienced in leading customer businesses and digital transformation, and in her new role, will be responsible for leading the next phase of Standard Life’s growth. She will report to Phoenix Group CEO, Andy Briggs, and build on the work of her predecessor, Colin Williams, who has decided that now is the right time to move on from his position. Commenting, Briggs said: “I’d like to thank Colin for his significant contribution to the business over the last five years. Angela’s leadership experience and ability to develop modern customer propositions will be invaluable as we enter the next phase of growth and enhance the offer to our customers.”
