Spence & Partners director, Hugh Nolan, has died of cancer.
Hugh was a key figure in the pensions industry and made a huge contribution on a range of pension issues, having also volunteered with the Society of Pensions Professionals (SPP), where he was president from 2016 to 2018. He was also an independent trustee under the Dalriada Trustees banner.
He graduated from the University of Oxford with a Master of Arts in Mathematics in 1989, having also captained the college darts team during his time at university.
Hugh joined the pensions industry soon after graduating and worked with several large consulting firms, including Mercer, Aon and JLT, where he was chief actuary, before joining the Spence & Partners team in April 2016 as a director. He also sat on the council of the SPP and was chair of the Association of Consulting Actuaries (ACA) defined contribution (DC) committee.
“It has been a pleasure to work with Hugh. There are few people who could be so trusted to provide dispassionate, appropriate and well considered advice and I have valued Hugh’s counsel on so many occasions,” Dalriada founder and CEO, Brian Spence, said.
“Hugh was our trusted friend and colleague. He was thoughtful, careful, generous with his time, experience, and support of others. He will be missed by all that knew and worked with him within our business and the wider pensions community.”
He is survived by his widow Helen and their three young children.
Pensions Age would like to pass on our deepest sympathies to Hugh’s family, and to his many friends and colleagues within the pensions sector.
