Former Shadow Pensions Minister Jack Dromey dies aged 73

Former Shadow Pensions Minister and Labour Party MP, Jack Dromey, has died at the age of 73.

A statement issued on behalf of his family said that he had died suddenly this morning (7 January) in his flat in Erdington.

Dromey had held his seat of Birmingham Erdington since 2010 and was Shadow Pensions Minister between 12 January 2018 and 7 January 2021.

Following his stint at Shadow Pensions Minister, Dromey held the role of Shadow Paymaster General and Shadow Minister for Immigration.

He is survived by his wife, fellow Labour MP Harriet Harman, and his three children.

In a statement his family said he was a "much loved husband, father and grandfather" who would be "greatly missed".

Prior to his work in parliament, Dromey held senior positions at the Transport and General Workers Union, and within the Labour Party.

MPs from across the political spectrum have been paying tribute to Dromey. Work and Pensions Secretary, Thérèse Coffey, described him as a "very decent MP and Shadow Minister" who would be "much missed".

Pensions Minister, Guy Opperman, who worked alongside Dromey on several pieces of pension policy, said it was "devastating news".

"Jack was an amazing man, and my opposite number in the House of Commons for many years," he wrote on Twitter.

"He was a delight to work with. Always polite, kind and always campaigning."
