Pat McFadden appointed as Secretary of State for Work and Pensions

MP for Wolverhampton South East Pat McFadden has been appointed as Secretary of State for Work and Pensions at the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP), as part of Prime Minister Keir Starmer's latest cabinet reshuffle.

McFadden was previously Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster between 5 July 2024 and 5 September 2025 and Minister for Intergovernmental Relations between 5 September 2024 and 6 September 2025.

The appointment was confirmed alongside the news that former Secretary of State for Work and Pensions Liz Kendall had been named Secretary of State for Science, Innovation and Technology.

In addition to this, Emma Reynolds, who was Pensions Minister in the second half of 2024 before moving to the Treasury in January, was named as Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs.

Whilst Torsten Bell remains as Pensions Minister, a number of additional appointments have also been made to the DWP.

In particular, Baroness Smith of Malvern has been appointed as Minister of State (Minister for Skills) in the DWP, while Dame Diana Johnson DBE MP has been named as a Minister of State for DWP.
