June 2022 court date set for 'multi-million pound' pension fraud case

The three defendants in The Pensions Regulator's (TPR's) investigation into a 'multi-million-pound' pension fraud have appeared in court again this week, with a trial date now confirmed for June 2022.

The defendants, Alan Barratt, 61, Julian Hanson, 56, and Susan Dalton, 65, have been charged with fraud by abuse of position as part of TPR's criminal prosecution.

The regulator alleged that between 2012 and 2014, 245 savers were persuaded to transfer their pension savings, totalling £13.7m, into 11 pension schemes, which were controlled by the defendants.

Both Barratt and Hanson pleaded not guilty to the charges at the latest hearing, whilst Dalton entered a guilty plea at a prior hearing in April.

Barratt previously had to be extradited from Spain to the UK by officers of the Metropolitan Police earlier this year for his suspected role in the pension fraud, in what represented a first for TPR.

The case has now been adjourned until June 13, 2022, when Barratt and Hanson will stand trial at Southwark Crown Court.

All defendants were released on conditional bail.
