Economy shrinks in Q4

The UK economy shrank by 0.2 per cent in the fourth quarter of last year, according to gross domestic product (GDP) statistics released today.

In a document outlining the figures, the Office for National Statistics (ONS) said output from production industries fell 1.2 per cent, while the construction sector contracted 0.5 per cent.

The latest figures compare to a 0.5 per cent contraction in GDP in the fourth quarter last year, when production increased 0.2 per cent but construction decreased by 1.4 per cent.

Overall GDP increased 0.8 per cent for the year after quarters one and three registered growth and activity was flat in the second quarter.

Public sector strikes over proposed changes to workers’ pension schemes and pay on 30 November were identified as being likely to have had a small impact on activity.
