Thousands of small businesses may face fines due to TPR website crash

Thousands of small businesses owners looking to auto-enrol face fines after part of The Pensions Regulator’s website crashed earlier this week.

According to the BBC, part of the regulator’s website has been out of order since “at least” Wednesday. As a result of this, some small businesses in the final stages of auto enrolment could face penalties for being unable to register and ultimately missing their staging date.

A business owner told the BBC that he had been attempting to register since Monday but the site had been down since then.

TPR has said that difficulties experience will be taken into consideration, although it cannot guarantee that all fines will be waived, the BBC reported.

The regulator said in a statement: “We are aware of a technical issue affecting some functionality on our website. We are working hard to resolve the issue as soon as possible.

"Anyone with concerns about their automatic enrolment pension duties should contact our helpline on 0345 600 1011. Each case will be discussed on an individual basis."

TPR confirmed that the error has been sorted and the site is now up and running.
