MPs to debate state pension regulations for UK expats

UK MPs are to debate a motion in the House of Commons on state pensions payable to members outside of the UK next month.

On 20 April 2017, parliament will consider the effects of the Social Security Benefits Up-rating Regulations 2017 on the benefits of UK expats with frozen pensions.

The formal motion to be debated is “That this House, noting the detrimental effect that the Social Security Benefits Up-rating Regulations 2017 will have on the lives of many expatriate UK citizens living overseas with frozen pensions; and insists that the government take the necessary steps to withdraw those Regulations.”

The Social Security Benefits Up-rating Regulations 2017 was made on 9 March this year, laid before parliament by the Secretary of State for Work and Pensions on 13 March and is set to come into force on 10 April 2017.

In reference to UK expats, the 2017 Regulations state: “Entitlement to state pension for overseas residents) shall apply to any additional benefit payable by virtue of the Up-rating Order and to any up-rating increase as defined in section 22(1) of the Pensions Act 2014 respectively.”

The debate will be opened and led by MP for North Thanet, Kent, Sir Roger Gale and MP for Ross, Skye and Lochaber Ian Blackford.

A full transcript of the session will be available on the Commons Hansard three hours after the debate.
