Conservative MP Damian Green has been appointed as the new Work and Pensions Secretary by new Prime Minister Theresa May.
He was previously Minister of State for Policing and Criminal Justice and Victims, having served this role since 2012. Prior to this, Green was Minister of State for Immigration.
He was also part of the Prime Minister's Policy Unit from 1992-94. Before Green embarked on a career in Parliament, he was Channel 4’s business editor and previously worked for BBC Radio.
Born in Wales, Green has been the Conservative member for Ashford since 1997, having been re-elected four times.
His appointment follows the resignation of Stephen Crabb who resigned from the position after just four months of his appointment.
In a statement, published by the BBC, Crabb said it had been a “huge privilege” to serve in the Cabinet over the last two years.
"After careful reflection I have informed the prime minister today that, in the best interests of my family, I cannot be part of her government at this time.
"I am grateful to my whole team for their hard work and encouragement. I look forward to supporting the government's one nation vision from the backbenches,” Crabb said.
Green’s appointment follows May naming former Foreign Minister Phillip Hammond as Chancellor of the Exchequer.
