Alan Pickering
is to leave consultant Watson Wyatt in order to take on the role
of chairman of BESTrustees in January 2009.
Pickering will succeed Charles Woodward as chairman and is expected
to take on a number of trusteeships on behalf of BESTrustees.
The former NAPF chairman and author of the 2002 government report,
A Simpler Way to Better Pensions, said that the move was
a “dream come true” for him.
“It’s time for a fresh challenge,” he said. “I
have been advising trustees for most of my career so it’s
exciting that I’m about to become one. It must be every coach’s
dream to leave the touchline and join the team.”
Clive Gilchrist, managing director at BESTrustees, said Pickering’s
“wisdom and down-to-earth style” and decades of pensions
experience would be a considerable asset.
Mark Stewart, head of the European benefits group at Watson Wyatt,
said the firm would miss Pickering, but recognised his desire for
new challenges. “He leaves with all our good wishes for the
future.”
Pickering added: “I have enjoyed my 16 years with Watson Wyatt.
Back in 1992, giving me a job was a bold move on the firm’s
part since I was by no means a chip off their old block. Watson
Wyatt has given me opportunities that were beyond my wildest dreams.
I shall forever cherish fond memories of colleagues and client alike.”
