Almost six out of ten (57 per cent) retirees would consider working past the State Pension Age (SPA), revealing a shift in attitudes towards retirement according to Prudential.
In an online survey of 8,676 UK non-retired adults aged 45 and over including 1,007 who intend to retire in 2013, 40 per cent of those looking to work beyond the SPA want to work in full time employment and 60 per cent would consider working part-time.
In addition, 40 per cent said that they were purely motivated on working past the SPA in order to boost their retirement incomes.
Prudential’s retirement income expert Stan Russell said: “Retiring at 60 or 65 years old is no longer a financial reality for many people, and the phased changes to the SPA acknowledges this is the case. Some people do not want to retire at all, while others are happy to retire as early as possible.
“Expected retirement incomes are at a six year low, and so it is important to plan ahead – and consult a financial adviser or retirement specialist – to ensure a comfortable retirement.”
