Public sector pension boards to get equal member representation

The House of Lords has passed an amendment to the Public Service Pensions Bill which will ensure equal representation of employer representatives and member representatives on public sector pension boards.

Amendment 10 of the Public Sector Pensions Bill was pushed in the Lords by Liberal Democrat peer Lord Sharkey.

Sharkey said: “With the amendments now before us, I think that the government have taken a realistic and fair view of member representatives. Equality of representation is very simple and clear and completely unambiguous.”

In separate amendments, Labour peer Lord Eatwell highlighted amendment 1 covering the pension age for Defence Fire and Rescue Service firefighters and amendment 2 which seeks to do the same for the Ministry of Defence Police. Eatwell stated that the retirement ages for both should be set at 60 in line with their local authority counterparts.
